A Year in Sport
From record-breaking runs on the river to a historic first on the football pitch, this has been a standout year for Headington Rye sport.
Our athletes have competed at the highest level across every discipline, securing a victory at the Henley Royal Regatta and claiming the School’s first-ever County Cup in football.
These results are a credit to both our pupils and the dedicated staff who support them. From coaching at national finals to standing on the touchline in the rain, our teachers provide the expertise and encouragement that allow these teams to thrive.
Rowing
HSOBC delivered an outstanding performance at the Henley Royal Regatta. For the third time in five years, the 1st VIII claimed the Prince Philip Challenge Trophy, setting a new course record.
The Senior Squad then stepped onto the international stage, travelling to Boston for the Head of the Charles Regatta. The VIII finished second, with the quad and single scull placing seventh and twenty-third respectively, HSOBC’s best ever result.
Back in the UK, the winter season concluded with strong results on the Tideway. At the Schools' Head of the River Race, three of six crews returned with medals, including a category win for the Girls’ 2nd VIII, ranked the fourth fastest schoolgirl eight nationally.

The club also delivered its best-ever performance at the Women's Eights Head of the River; with our top two boats taking first and second place in the School/Junior category, with both finishing in the top 20 out of 300+ women's crews. There were also 17 alumni racing for their respective universities and clubs, while another coached her university crew.

Hockey
Hockey has been a cornerstone of life at the School since 1915, and our teams honoured this with a rare triple victory, with our U14A, U15A and U16 Indoor squads crowned County Champions.
This winning form carried onto the national stage in the England Hockey knockout tournaments. The U16As reached the national quarter-finals after a string of excellent rounds in the knockout tournament, while the U14As advanced to the regional semi-finals. The U12 and U13A teams also fought their way through to the South Central finals in March.
The 1st XI set the standard for the season. They began at Lilleshall National Sports Centre, where they received valuable training and competitive fixtures. That preparation saw them progress far into the National Plate competition, providing the leadership that inspired our younger players in their own successes.

Netball
Headington Rye netball has reached new heights this season, headlined by the U16s placing seventh in the country at the England Netball National Schools Finals. This national success was supported by strong performances in the County Championships, where the U14s took third, and both the U16 and U19 teams finished as runners-up to advance to the Regional Rounds.
This strength was reflected right across all age groups. In Sisters in Sport, both the U12B and the U15B squads recorded perfect seasons, winning every one of their fixtures. Furthermore, our teams achieved a clean sweep of victories across all VII teams in the Varsity competition against MCS.
Individual talent continues to thrive, with several players selected for the England Netball Pathway and Netball Super League PDP programs.

Cross Country
Headington Rye runners have delivered a standout Cross Country season, marked by podium finishes and success in major national competitions.
The season opened with a dominant display at the St Helen & St Katharine’s relays, where our Year 9A team took first place and the Year 7A team secured second. This momentum continued into the English Schools Athletic Association Cup, where the Intermediate Girls team finished second in the region, earning a spot in the National Finals and a final ranking of twenty-third in the country.
The Senior Girls secured an impressive victory at the Radley relays, and most impressively six athletes were selected to represent Oxfordshire at the National Championships; a clear reflection of the calibre of Headington Rye runners.

Cricket
Cricket is one of our fastest-growing sports, with Headington Rye now consistently challenging for honours at the county level. The year began with a significant milestone as Flora, Bridget and Abby spearheaded their sides' victory in the Oxfordshire U13 Cricket Final.
This early success set the tone for the indoor county rounds. Both the U13 and U15A teams fought their way into the County Finals with a string of impressive performances, showing just how much the girls have sharpened their batting and bowling over the season. Perhaps most encouraging is the depth of the program; the U15B team took on some of the toughest opposition in the region with real determination, marking a term of huge progress across the board. Seeing our players compete, and win, at this level shows that Headington Rye is becoming a true home for girls' cricket.

Football
Headington Rye Oxford reached a historic milestone this season, with the U16 squad securing the School’s first-ever County Cup. In a dominant performance against Bicester School, the team claimed the title with a commanding 5-0 victory.
This competitive standard starts with our youngest players. In March, three Year 4 teams represented the school at the St Hugh’s Tournament, with every squad finishing on the podium. The B team took first place, while both the A and C teams secured second place overall.
